Ceramic shares structural and physical similarities with glass in that both are inorganic, non-metallic, rigid, and brittle materials formed through high-temperature processes, but ceramic is entirely distinct from plastic. Plastics are flexible, organic polymer chains derived from petroleum with low melting points. Ceramics and glass are hard, heat-resistant mineral solids held together by strong ionic and covalent bonds. However, while glass is amorphous and transparent, traditional ceramics are crystalline and opaque.
