Ceramic coatings on cookware or automotive finishes can be destroyed or severely degraded by using harsh abrasive scouring pads, metal utensils, aggressive chemical cleaners containing high alkalinity or strong acids, and automatic dishwasher cycles with harsh detergents. Exceeding recommended cooking temperatures on non-stick ceramic pans can also permanently carbonize food residues onto the surface, clogging its microscopic release pores. Gentle hand washing with mild soap and soft sponges preserves the coating.
