A shallow French drain can work effectively if its primary goal is capturing surface water puddles or shallow lawn runoff. However, if the shallow drain is intended to protect a deep basement or foundation footing from groundwater, it will fail because water will saturate the soil underneath the shallow trench and still press against the lower foundation walls.
