A French drain should be avoided when there is no legal or gravity-fed downhill discharge outlet available, in extremely flat areas lacking proper slope, or where heavy surface runoff carries excessive silt and mud that will rapidly overwhelm and clog the gravel bed. Additionally, they are inappropriate for handling massive subterranean water tables without supplementary sump pump integration.
