Comparing a sump pump and a French drain is not a matter of which is better, as they serve different functions and are often used together. A French drain uses gravity to collect and divert exterior subsurface water away from the foundation before it enters. Conversely, a sump pump actively pumps out accumulated water from an interior basement basin. Exterior water management requires a French drain, while sub-grade basement flooding requires a sump pump.
