Neither is inherently better because they serve different purposes. A French drain is a subterranean trench filled with gravel and a perforated pipe designed to capture and redirect underground groundwater. A trench drain (channel drain) features an open surface grate installed flush with patios, driveways, or walkways to rapidly collect surface water runoff.
