A French drain should not be installed where there is no legal, downhill, or gravity-fed discharge outlet available to drain the water away safely, as pooling water will simply back up into the system. Additionally, they are ineffective in low-lying flat areas without positive slope, or where heavy surface runoff carries excessive silt that will rapidly clog the gravel bed.
