Directly burying a French drain with raw topsoil is discouraged because dirt will quickly wash down into the gravel, clogging the system. Instead, you should wrap the excess non-woven geotextile filter fabric completely over the top of the gravel-filled trench to encase it securely, and then place a thin layer of decorative river rock, mulch, or porous turf on top.
