Digging a simple deep hole and filling it with gravel (often called a dry well or sump pit) can work for very small, minor yard puddles. However, for larger volumes of water, a simple dead-end hole will quickly fill up, saturate the surrounding soil, and fail to drain properly because it lacks an outlet or sufficient storage capacity for continuous heavy runoff.
