The location of the filter for your Whirlpool washing machine depends on whether you have a front-load or top-load model. For Whirlpool front-load washers like models WFW5605MW, WFW6720RW, WFW6620HC, WFW8620HC, and WFW560CHW, the drain pump filter is located behind a small rectangular access panel at the bottom front of the machine, usually on the lower left or lower right corner. To access it, use a flat screwdriver to gently pop open the panel, you will see a small black drain hose and a round filter knob. Place towels and a shallow pan underneath, pull out drain hose to drain residual water, then twist filter counterclockwise and pull out to clean. For Whirlpool top-load washers like models WTW5010LW, WTW7120HC, WTW8120HW, WTW5000DW, and WTW5057LW, there is no user-accessible drain pump filter in the front; instead they have a self-cleaning lint filter built into the wash plate or agitator that does not require removal, and inlet valve screens where fill hoses connect at back of machine that should be checked yearly for sediment buildup. Some newer Whirlpool top-load models with removable agitators have a filter under the agitator that can be lifted out. Always unplug washer before accessing filter and check your specific model's manual at whirlpool.com for exact location diagram.
