The biggest problem with Whirlpool washers, particularly recent top-load models with 2-in-1 agitators like the WTW5010LW, WTW7120HC, and WTW8120HW, is excessive vibration, unbalanced loads, and premature suspension rod failure, followed by drain pump clogging and control board failures. Many owners report that Whirlpool top-load washers frequently go out of balance during spin cycle, causing loud banging, walking across floor, and displaying UL or unbalanced load errors, even with properly sorted loads. This is due to weaker suspension rods that wear out after 2 to 4 years and cannot handle larger modern capacities. Second biggest is drain pump filter clogging that causes washer to not drain or spin, leaving clothes soaking wet and displaying LD or F9E1 errors, requiring monthly filter cleaning that many owners do not know about. Third, control board and lid lock failures on front-load models like WFW5605MW and WFW6620HC where door lock fails to engage after 3 to 5 years, costing 150 to 250 dollars. Fourth, foul odor and mold in door gasket on front-load models from poor drainage of gasket. Fifth, water inlet valve failure causing slow fill or no fill. While Whirlpool has good overall reliability at 6 to 9 percent service rate, these issues are most common complaints. Regular maintenance, not overloading, and using HE detergent reduce problems significantly.
