Yes, Whirlpool washers have a filter that needs to be cleaned, but the location and type depends on whether it is a front-load or top-load model. Whirlpool front-load washers like the WFW5605MW, WFW6720RR, and WFW6620HC have a drain pump filter located behind a small access panel at the bottom front of the machine, usually on the lower left or right corner. This filter traps lint, coins, hair, and small objects to protect the drain pump and must be cleaned every 1 to 3 months to prevent OE drain errors, slow draining, and foul odors. To clean it, place towels and a shallow pan underneath, open the access door, pull out the drain hose to drain residual water, then twist and remove the filter and rinse it under running water. Whirlpool top-load washers like the WTW5010LW, WTW7120HC, and WTW8120HW typically have a lint filter built into the agitator or under the wash plate that is self-cleaning and does not require manual removal, but they have inlet valve screens where hoses connect that should be checked yearly for sediment. Some newer top-load models also have a drain pump filter accessible from the back. Cleaning the drain pump filter monthly prevents 80 percent of drain problems, reduces odor, and extends pump life. Always unplug washer before cleaning filter and check pockets for coins and tissues.
