You know your washing machine filter is clogged when you notice several performance and odor warning signs. The most obvious sign is washer not draining or draining very slowly, leaving clothes soaking wet at end of cycle and water standing in drum, often accompanied by error codes like LD, F9E1, F21, or OE on display. Second, washer not spinning or stopping mid-cycle before spin because control detects water still present and prevents high-speed spin to protect motor. Third, foul odor or musty smell coming from washer, door gasket, or drain, caused by trapped lint, hair, and organic debris decomposing in filter and pump housing. Fourth, loud gurgling, humming, or grinding noises from drain pump area at bottom front during drain attempt, indicating pump struggling to push water through clog. Fifth, water leaking from front bottom where filter access panel is, as clogged filter causes pressure buildup and water to seep. Sixth, longer cycle times as washer repeatedly tries to drain. Seventh, visible debris like coins, hair, lint, and small socks when you remove filter. To check, place towels and shallow pan under filter access panel at bottom front for front-load or back bottom for some top-load, pull out drain hose to drain residual water, twist filter counterclockwise, and inspect. If filter is packed with lint and debris, it is clogged. Clean it every 1 to 3 months to prevent issues.
