To fix a clogged Whirlpool washer drain pump, you need to clean the drain pump filter and check the pump impeller for obstructions. First, unplug the washer from wall outlet and turn off water supply valves for safety. Second, locate the drain pump filter: for front-load models, it is behind the small access panel at bottom front of machine, usually lower left; for top-load, access is from back or bottom. Place towels and a shallow pan or baking sheet underneath to catch water, as there will be 1 to 2 quarts of residual water. Third, drain residual water: pull out the small black drain hose next to filter, remove its cap, and let water drain into pan. Fourth, remove filter: twist filter counterclockwise slowly and pull out, water will gush, so be ready. Fifth, clean filter and housing: remove lint, hair, coins, buttons, socks, and debris from filter and from inside pump housing, shine flashlight inside to see if something is stuck on impeller, use needle-nose pliers to remove obstructions. Sixth, inspect impeller: reach inside and try to spin impeller, it should spin freely with slight resistance; if stuck or broken, pump may need replacement at 150 to 250 dollars. Seventh, reinstall filter firmly clockwise, reinsert drain hose, close access panel, plug in, and run a rinse and spin cycle to test. Clean filter monthly to prevent recurrence.
