Whirlpool washers do not have a dedicated physical reset button like a small red button, but you can reset them through power cycling and control panel button sequences. The most effective universal reset is a hard power reset: unplug the washer from the wall outlet or turn off the circuit breaker that supplies it, wait at least 1 to 2 minutes, some technicians recommend 5 minutes to allow the main control board capacitors to fully discharge, then plug it back in. This clears temporary electronic glitches, error codes like F9E1 or F8E1, and lid lock issues after a power outage. For top-load models, there is a calibration reset: with washer in standby mode, press and hold the Start button for 3 seconds to cancel cycle, then unplug for 1 minute. For front-load models, you can enter diagnostic mode to reset: with washer off, press and hold the 3rd button from left, then press Power, or press Spin, Soil, Spin, Soil sequence within 5 seconds, then press Start to run diagnostic and clear errors. To reset control lock, press and hold the Control Lock or Extra Rinse button for 3 seconds. To reset after unbalanced load, redistribute clothes and press Start. A reset will not fix mechanical failures like failed drain pump, water inlet valve, or suspension rods but often clears electronic glitches. Always check drain pump filter and inlet screens before resetting.
