When a self-leveling compound is either too expensive or impractical for a specific project, several alternative materials can be used to flatten and smooth uneven floors. Traditional floor patch and repair mortars applied with a trowel work exceptionally well for filling localized low spots, dips, or gouges without requiring large-scale liquid pours. For minor height differences or slight surface irregularities, specialized cementitious patching compounds or even heavy-duty sanding can successfully level wood or concrete subfloors. In some framing scenarios, adding shins, sistering joists, or installing thin plywood underlayment layers can also correct structural slope issues.
