Applying a specialized primer before pouring self-leveling compound onto concrete is an absolutely mandatory step that should never be bypassed. The concrete subfloor is porous, and without a sealing primer, it will rapidly absorb the moisture from the wet self-leveling mixture. This premature moisture loss causes the compound to dry too quickly, resulting in severe cracking, shrinkage, and loss of adhesion that leads to delamination. Furthermore, a primer acts as a bonding agent and prevents trapped air bubbles from rising through the liquid underlayment and forming unsightly pinholes or craters across the finished surface.
