When self-leveling concrete is either too expensive, complex, or impractical for a specific project, several alternative materials and methods can be employed to flatten and smooth uneven floors. Traditional floor patch and repair mortars applied manually with a steel trowel work exceptionally well for filling localized low spots, dips, or structural gouges without requiring large liquid pours. For minor height discrepancies or subtle surface irregularities, cementitious patching compounds or heavy-duty mechanical sanding can successfully level wood or concrete subfloors. In framing scenarios, adding shims, sistering joists, or installing thin plywood underlayments can also correct slope issues.
