Applying a specialized primer before pouring self-leveling concrete is an absolutely essential step that should never be skipped during floor preparation. The primary purpose of the primer is to seal the porous subfloor surface, prevent air bubbles from rising up through the liquid underlayment and forming pinholes or craters, and create a strong bond between the old substrate and the new self-leveling compound. Without a proper primer, the dry subfloor will rapidly absorb the moisture from the wet concrete mix, causing the self-leveling material to dry too quickly, crack, delaminate, or fail entirely under foot traffic and floor covering installations.
