While the vast majority of ceramic, porcelain, and stone tile installations require at least minimal joint spacing and grout to accommodate structural movement and thermal expansion, certain specialized materials can be installed tightly together. Interlocking luxury vinyl tile (LVT), engineered click-lock flooring planks, and certain interlocking garage or patio tiles fit flush against one another without needing any grout. Additionally, large-scale engineered stone or solid-surface wall panels are designed as seamless systems. However, traditional ceramic and porcelain tile should never be installed completely without grout, as structural shifts will cause the tiles to crack and break.
