Attempting to grout a massive one-inch gap using standard sanded or unsanded tile grout is entirely impractical and will result in catastrophic structural failure. Standard tile grouts are specifically engineered for narrow joints measuring between one-sixteenth and one-half of an inch maximum; in gaps as wide as one inch, standard grout will severely shrink, slump out of place, and develop deep, destructive cracks as it dries. For gaps approaching an inch or wider between tiles, stone slabs, or masonry units, you must utilize specialized high-aggregate mortar mixes, expansion joint backer rods, or structural patching compounds designed to span large voids safely.
