While mixing powdered tile grout with water is the most common method, simply adding plain tap water is not always the sole requirement depending on the specific product formulation and performance goals. Standard cement-based dry powder grouts require precise water measurements to achieve the proper peanut-butter-like consistency, as adding too much water weakens the final compressive strength and causes severe color fading or cracking. Furthermore, many professional tile setters replace plain mixing water with a liquid latex or polymer additive to significantly boost bond strength, flexibility, and stain resistance. Additionally, pre-mixed acrylic, epoxy, or urethane grouts do not require adding any water or liquid at all, as they come ready to use right out of the container.
