For standard cement-based grout in a residential shower, applying two to three coats of a high-quality penetrating sealer immediately after the initial full cure is the recommended baseline, followed by routine reapplication every one to two years. Because showers experience daily high-volume water exposure, thermal expansion, and harsh soap scum accumulation, checking the water-repellency of your grout annually by dropping water beads onto the joint is essential; if the water absorbs instead of beading up, it is time for a fresh coat of sealer. However, if you installed pre-sealed grout or epoxy-based grout, periodic sealing is completely unnecessary.
