Newly installed tile can safely sit without grout for twenty-four to forty-eight hours—or however long it takes for the underlying thinset mortar to completely cure and dry—provided the installation area remains entirely protected from foot traffic, moisture, and dust accumulation. Leaving tiles ungrouted for a few days during a multi-step home renovation is common practice, but you should never expose ungrouted tile to heavy traffic or water exposure, as dirt will contaminate the open gaps and unanchored tiles can easily shift, crack, or loosen if bumped or stepped upon before the mortar and grout lock them permanently into place.
