Satin is only good for your skin like silk if the satin is actually made from silk. This distinction is crucial because satin is a weave, not a fiber. Silk satin, also called silk charmeuse, is 100% silk fiber woven in a satin weave, and it offers all the skin benefits of silk. It is naturally hypoallergenic, contains amino acids that are gentle on skin, is resistant to dust mites and mold, does not absorb your skincare products or strip natural oils as much as cotton, and has very low friction which reduces tugging, redness, and sleep creases. Dermatologists often recommend it for acne and eczema. Polyester satin, which is what most affordable satin pillowcases, pajamas, and sheets are made from, looks similar but does not offer the same skin benefits. While it does have low friction and can reduce creasing and hair frizz compared to cotton, it is not breathable, does not wick moisture, traps sweat and oil against the skin, can create a warm environment that worsens acne for some people, and may be treated with chemical dyes and finishes that irritate sensitive skin. So polyester satin gives you the slip but not the true skin health benefits of real silk.
