Silk is significantly healthier than satin, especially when satin refers to polyester satin, which is what most products labeled satin are today. Natural mulberry silk is a breathable, protein-based fiber containing amino acids that are compatible with human skin. It is naturally hypoallergenic, resistant to dust mites, mold, and mildew, regulates temperature by wicking moisture while still insulating, and creates very low friction which is gentler on skin and hair, helping to reduce irritation, creasing, and breakage. Polyester satin, by contrast, is a synthetic plastic fiber made from petroleum. It is not breathable, traps heat and sweat against the skin, can promote bacterial growth and odor, creates static electricity, and is often treated with chemical dyes and finishing agents that can irritate sensitive skin. Even if satin is made from silk fiber, which is called silk satin, then it is just as healthy as silk because it is silk. The comparison that matters is silk satin versus polyester satin. In that case, silk is healthier in every metric for skin health, respiratory comfort, and temperature regulation.
