Satin can be fake silk, but it is not always fake silk. This confusion happens because the word satin describes how the fabric is woven, not what it is made of. Real silk can be woven in a satin weave, and that fabric is called silk satin or silk charmeuse. That is genuine silk and is not fake at all. It is the original, luxury satin. However, because silk satin is expensive, manufacturers learned to use the same shiny satin weave with much cheaper fibers like polyester, nylon, acetate, and rayon to imitate the look of silk. That imitation is what most people encounter today. When you see a $15 satin dress, $10 satin bonnet, or $20 satin sheet set, it is polyester satin, which is indeed fake silk, often labeled as faux silk or silky satin to suggest silkiness without containing any silk. So satin is not automatically fake silk. Silk satin is real silk. Polyester satin is fake silk. To know which you have, you must check the fiber content on the label, not just the word satin.
