The term satin does not refer to a specific material or fiber, it refers to a specific weaving technique that creates a glossy, smooth surface. In a satin weave, the weft threads float over four or more warp threads, which minimizes interlacing and allows light to reflect evenly, producing that characteristic shine on one side and a dull matte finish on the other. Because it is a weave, satin can be made from many different materials. The traditional and most luxurious material for satin is silk, producing silk satin. Today, the most common material used to make satin is polyester, which is a synthetic fiber made from petroleum. You will also find satin made from nylon, acetate, rayon or viscose, cotton in the form of sateen, and blends. When someone asks what material is satin, the answer is you have to look at the label. If it says polyester satin, the material is plastic. If it says silk satin, the material is natural silk protein. If it says cotton sateen, the material is cotton. So satin is defined by how it is woven, not what it is made from, even though modern commerce often uses satin as shorthand for polyester.
