Dermatologists often do recommend satin pillowcases, but they are very specific about what kind of satin they mean. When dermatologists say satin, they usually mean silk satin, which is made from natural silk in a satin weave. Many board-certified dermatologists recommend 100% mulberry silk pillowcases for patients with acne, eczema, sensitive skin, or who want to reduce fine lines and morning facial creasing. The reason is that silk satin has very low friction compared to cotton, so the skin does not drag and fold as much during sleep, it does not absorb skincare products and natural oils from the face as much as cotton does, and it is naturally hypoallergenic and less likely to harbor dust mites. For hair, dermatologists also note less breakage and frizz. When the pillowcase is cheap polyester satin, dermatologists are less enthusiastic. While polyester satin is still low-friction and better than cotton for creasing, it is not breathable, traps heat and sweat, and can potentially worsen acne for some people. So the recommendation is generally yes for silk satin, with a qualified yes for polyester satin if silk is unaffordable.
