Satin itself is not inherently unhealthy, but polyester satin, which is the most common type sold, can be less healthy for skin and comfort compared to natural fibers. Satin is a weave, so its health impact comes from its fiber content. Silk satin is very healthy, breathable, hypoallergenic, and gentle on skin and hair. Polyester satin, on the other hand, is made from plastic. It is not breathable, does not absorb sweat, traps heat and moisture against the body, and can create a warm, damp environment that encourages bacteria, yeast, and body odor, which may aggravate acne, eczema, or fungal issues in some people. It also builds up static electricity and can be treated with synthetic dyes and formaldehyde-based wrinkle-resistant finishes that can irritate sensitive skin. It is not toxic to wear for most people, but it is not optimal for prolonged skin contact, especially for underwear, workout wear, or bedding if you are prone to sweating or sensitive skin. If you like the look of satin but want a healthier option, choose silk satin, cotton sateen, or cupro instead of 100% polyester satin.
