In Isaac Asimov's original book trilogy, Magnifico Giganticus—the seemingly timid, pathetic clown and musician rescued by Bayta and Ebling Mis—is indeed revealed to be the terrifying mentalic conqueror known as the Mule in disguise. The Mule used his incredible emotional-manipulation powers to project a persona of harmless weakness, hiding his true identity in plain sight until his psychological dominance over the galaxy's resistance forces was completely unveiled.
