In Isaac Asimov's original mid-twentieth-century science fiction book series, Gaal Dornick is written and depicted as a young male mathematician originating from the oceanic planet of Synnax who travels to the galactic capital of Trantor to study under Hari Seldon. In the Apple TV+ television adaptation, the character was deliberately gender-swapped into a female protagonist portrayed by actress Lou Llobell as part of modern creative modernization efforts.
