RAC does not by itself cover all of Australia as a single company, but through a reciprocal national network, your RAC membership does provide cover across Australia. RAC stands for Royal Automobile Club, and each state has its own separate RAC organisation, including RAC in Western Australia, RACV in Victoria, NRMA in New South Wales, RACQ in Queensland, RAA in South Australia, RAC Tasmania, and AANT in Northern Territory. These clubs are part of the Australian Automobile Association. If you are a member of RAC WA, for example, and you break down in Sydney or Melbourne, you can call RAC WA and they will arrange assistance through their affiliate club NRMA or RACV under a reciprocal agreement, so you are still covered Australia-wide for roadside assistance. The level of benefits may vary slightly when using interstate affiliates. For roadside assistance, basic and premium cover purchased in one state generally provides national cover for breakdowns, battery jump starts, flat tyres, lockouts and limited towing. However, for other RAC products like car insurance, home insurance and travel insurance, each RAC only sells insurance in its own state, so RAC WA insurance only covers you in WA, RACV insurance is for Victoria, NRMA Insurance is for NSW, and so on. So while roadside assistance is national via reciprocity, insurance and other RAC member benefits like discounts are state-based. If you travel around Australia, you should check that your roadside policy includes national towing and accommodation benefits.
