Yes, house spiders can bite, but most house spiders rarely bite humans and their bites are generally harmless, causing only minor irritation, because house spiders are shy and prefer to avoid humans, biting only when they feel threatened, trapped against skin, or pressed, such as when rolled onto in bed, when putting on clothing where spider hides, or when handling them. Common house spiders like cellar spiders, common house spider, and orb weavers have fangs but their venom is weak and not medically significant to humans, bites may cause small red bump, slight swelling, and mild itching similar to mosquito bite that resolves in few days. Only a few house spiders have medically significant bites, such as black widow spider identifiable by red hourglass on abdomen, and brown recluse spider with violin shape, whose bites can cause more serious symptoms and require medical attention, but these spiders are less common indoors and bites are still rare. Most house spider bites occur at night accidentally. To prevent bites, keep home clean and clutter free, vacuum regularly including corners and under furniture, shake out clothing and bedding before use, wear gloves when moving boxes in attic or garage, and seal cracks around windows and doors. If bitten, clean area with soap and water, apply ice to reduce swelling, and monitor for signs like increasing pain, spreading redness, or fever, and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen or if you suspect black widow or brown recluse bite.
