Rosanna by Toto was written by David Paich, the keyboardist and one of the founding members of the band Toto. Released in 1982 on the album Toto IV, Rosanna became one of Toto's biggest hits, winning the Grammy Award for Record of the Year in 1983. David Paich wrote the song about his high school girlfriend, but the band often joked that it was about actress Rosanna Arquette, who was dating keyboardist Steve Porcaro at the time. Rosanna Arquette herself has said the song was not about her, but the association helped its popularity. The song is famous for its distinctive half-time shuffle drum beat played by drummer Jeff Porcaro, which he called the Rosanna shuffle, inspired by Led Zeppelin's Fool in the Rain. The song features lead vocals by Steve Lukather and Bobby Kimball, and includes a guitar solo and layered harmonies that became Toto's signature. David Paich has writing credits on many Toto hits including Africa, Hold the Line, and Georgy Porgy. Rosanna peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remains a staple of classic rock radio. The song's lyrics describe a lost love and longing, with the chorus Rosanna, Rosanna, I never thought that you would be the one to let me go.
