As of 2026, four of the six original founding members of Toto are still alive. Toto was formed in Los Angeles in 1977. The original lineup was David Paich on keyboards and vocals, Jeff Porcaro on drums, Steve Porcaro on keyboards, Steve Lukather on guitar and vocals, Bobby Kimball on lead vocals, and David Hungate on bass. Of those, Jeff Porcaro, the drummer and one of the most influential drummers in history, died on August 5, 1992, at age 38 from a heart attack caused by an allergic reaction to pesticide. Bobby Kimball, the original lead singer on hits like Hold the Line and Rosanna, died in recent years after health issues. The remaining original members still alive are Steve Lukather, who continues to lead the current touring version of Toto, David Paich who still writes and occasionally tours, Steve Porcaro who works on film scoring and electronics, and David Hungate who retired from touring but is still alive. Additionally, later members like Joseph Williams, who became lead singer in 1986 and is the son of composer John Williams, is alive and tours with Toto, and Mike Porcaro, bassist from 1982 to 2007 and brother of Jeff and Steve, passed away in 2015 from ALS. So of the original six, four are alive, and of the classic 1980s lineup, most are still alive.
