Several famous musicians have refused or boycotted their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, most famously the Sex Pistols and Axl Rose of Guns N' Roses. In 2006, the Sex Pistols were inducted but refused to attend the ceremony, calling it a piss stain and writing a famously rude letter saying they were not coming and that the Hall of Fame was not paying attention to them. They did not show up. In 2012, Axl Rose, lead singer of Guns N' Roses, refused to be inducted with the classic lineup of Guns N' Roses, writing an open letter saying he would not attend and did not want to be inducted in absentia, due to conflicts with former band members. He was still inducted but did not attend. Other artists have protested or skipped. Roger Waters did not attend Pink Floyd's induction in 1996. Steve Miller criticized the Hall of Fame during his induction in 2016, saying the whole process was unpleasant. Paul McCartney did not attend The Beatles' induction in 1988 due to business disputes, though he was inducted. Neil Young skipped Buffalo Springfield's induction in 1997. Perhaps the most principled refusal was by English rock band The Sex Pistols, who actively rejected it on anti-establishment grounds. No artist has been able to remove themselves from the Hall of Fame entirely once voted in, but these artists refused to participate in the ceremony.
