The original lead singer of Toto was Bobby Kimball, who served as the band's primary lead vocalist from its formation in 1977 until 1984. Bobby Kimball, born Robert Troy Kimball in 1947 in Orange, Texas, was recruited to join Toto after the instrumental members, who were highly successful Los Angeles session musicians, decided they needed a dedicated powerful vocalist. Kimball's soaring high tenor voice became the signature sound on Toto's early hits. He sang lead on the band's debut hit Hold the Line in 1978, which reached number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, as well as Rosanna, which peaked at number 2 in 1982, and many other tracks on the first four albums. However, Toto was unusual in that it had multiple lead singers. While Kimball was the main lead singer, guitarist Steve Lukather and keyboardist David Paich also sang lead on many songs. For example, Lukather sang lead on Georgy Porgy and I Won't Hold You Back, and Paich sang lead on Africa and much of Rosanna's verses. Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in 1984 due to vocal issues and personal conflicts, and was replaced by Fergie Frederiksen and later Joseph Williams, son of film composer John Williams, who sang lead on many 1980s hits. Kimball later rejoined Toto from 1998 to 2008.
