Boz Scaggs did not play in Toto as an official member, but he is closely connected to the band's history and many members of Toto played on his albums before Toto was formed. In the mid-1970s, Boz Scaggs, a successful singer known for hits like Lowdown and Lido Shuffle, hired a group of highly skilled Los Angeles session musicians to record his 1976 album Silk Degrees, which became a massive hit. Those session musicians were David Paich on keyboards, Jeff Porcaro on drums, David Hungate on bass, and later Steve Lukather on guitar. After working with Scaggs, these musicians decided to form their own band, which became Toto in 1977. So Toto essentially grew out of Boz Scaggs' backing band. David Paich co-wrote several songs on Silk Degrees including Lowdown and What Can I Say. Jeff Porcaro and David Hungate were Scaggs' rhythm section. So while Boz Scaggs was never a member of Toto, Toto was his backing band before they became famous, and he helped launch their careers. Later, members of Toto continued to play on Boz Scaggs albums. Boz Scaggs has performed live with Toto members as guests, but he was never officially listed as a member of the band Toto.
