For the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, no core permanent sports are being officially removed from the Olympic program, but three sports that were on the Paris 2024 program will not be included in LA 2028 as part of the rotating optional sports system. The International Olympic Committee allows host cities to propose optional sports, and Paris chose breaking, also called breakdancing, which debuted in Paris 2024 but will not return in Los Angeles 2028 after receiving mixed reviews and low global participation. Additionally, two sports that were previously optional are being left out of the LA program in favor of new sports more popular in the US. The sports not returning are breaking, and in terms of changes, boxing is currently at risk due to governance issues with the International Boxing Association, though it is expected to be included under World Boxing governance. Meanwhile, LA 2028 will add five sports that were not in Paris: cricket in the T20 format which is hugely popular in South Asia, flag football which is growing rapidly in the US, lacrosse in the sixes format, squash, and baseball and softball which return after being absent in Paris. So rather than removals, the program is evolving to include sports that appeal to American audiences while pausing breaking.
