The Olympic Village has a long tradition of distributing large numbers of condoms to athletes as part of health promotion and HIV prevention programs, and the numbers have grown dramatically over the decades. At the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, organizers distributed approximately 300,000 condoms in the Olympic Village for about 14,500 athletes and staff, which averages to about 20 condoms per athlete over the two-week period, plus 20,000 female condoms and 10,000 dental dams. This continues a tradition that started at the Seoul 1988 Olympics when about 8,500 condoms were distributed to raise awareness about HIV, and numbers increased to 90,000 at Barcelona 1992, 15,000 at Atlanta 1996, 70,000 at Sydney 2000, 250,000 at Athens 2004, and a peak of 450,000 at Rio 2016. Tokyo 2020 distributed 150,000 condoms despite COVID-19 social distancing rules asking athletes to take them home rather than use them in the village. The condoms are provided free by health organizations and sponsors like Durex, along with lubricants and educational materials, and are intended to promote safe sex among a population of young, healthy adults living in close quarters. While not all condoms are used during the Games, many athletes take them home as souvenirs, and the program is widely seen as a successful public health initiative.
