You should not spray WD-40 on many surfaces and components despite its reputation as a fix-all. Never spray it on door hinges that are meant to have grease, as it will dissolve existing grease and cause more friction later, use white lithium grease instead. Do not spray it on bicycle chains, locks, or gears for long-term lubrication because it is a solvent, not a lasting lubricant, and will wash away proper lube. Avoid spraying it on rubber seals, gaskets, and O-rings excessively because petroleum distillates can swell and degrade rubber over time. Never spray it on brake pads, brake rotors, or tires, as it reduces friction and is extremely dangerous. Do not spray it on electrical electronics, screens, or near open flames because it is flammable and can damage circuits, use electrical contact cleaner instead. Avoid painted walls, some plastics, and polycarbonate that can become cloudy. Do not spray it on wood floors or as a floor polish as it makes surfaces dangerously slippery. Never spray it near food preparation areas or in your toilet as a disinfectant. Also avoid using it on stainless steel appliances without testing, as it can leave streaks. Use products designed for the specific job rather than WD-40.
