The hardest color to paint a vehicle is generally considered to be black, with other difficult colors being bright red, pearl white, and metallic silver. Black is hardest because it shows every imperfection in bodywork, every dust speck, every orange peel texture, every swirl mark, and every uneven sanding scratch. It requires flawless prep, perfectly clean spray booth, and expert technique to avoid blotchiness and requires extensive color sanding and buffing to look perfect. Bright red is difficult because red pigments have poor coverage and are often translucent, requiring many coats and careful control to avoid streaking and fading, and it is prone to UV fading over time. Pearl white and tri-coat colors are extremely hard because they involve three layers, base, pearl mid-coat, and clear, and matching the pearl flop is nearly impossible, so blending is difficult. Metallic silver is tricky because metallic flakes can lay unevenly and cause tiger striping or mottling if spray gun pressure and overlap are not perfect. Matte and satin finishes are also hard because you cannot color sand and buff out mistakes without adding gloss. For DIY painters, black and any tri-coat pearl are best left to professionals.
