Refinishing and refurbishing are related but different levels of restoration. Refinishing specifically refers to the process of treating the surface finish of an item, usually wood furniture or floors. It means stripping off the old stain, paint, or clear coat and applying a new finish to make it look new. It is purely cosmetic and focused on the outer layer. Refurbishing is a broader, more comprehensive term that means making something look and function like new again. Refurbishing can include refinishing as one step, but it also includes repairs, structural fixes, replacing hardware, tightening joints, reupholstering, rewiring, and mechanical restoration. For example, refinishing a chair would mean sanding and restaining it, while refurbishing a chair would mean sanding, restaining, regluing loose legs, replacing the seat cushion, and replacing missing screws. In electronics, refurbishing means testing, repairing, cleaning, and repackaging a device for resale, not just polishing the outside. In furniture flipping, refurbishing often implies painting, distressing, and modernizing, while refinishing implies preserving the wood and restoring its original look. So refinishing is a part of refurbishing, but refurbishing is the complete overhaul.
