When you get your floors refinished, you must remove all furniture from the area being sanded because sanding creates massive amounts of fine dust and fumes and you cannot have anything on the floor. For a full house refinish, move all furniture, rugs, curtains, and belongings into a garage, storage pod, or spare room that is sealed off with plastic. For a partial refinish, move furniture to an unfinished room, basement, or rent a small storage unit for a week. Empty closets, remove wall art, cover built-in shelves with plastic, and remove drapes because dust will penetrate everything even with dustless sanding systems. Large items like pianos, heavy dressers, and sofas should be moved by professionals or with furniture sliders before sanding begins. After sanding and finishing, do not bring furniture back until the finish has cured enough to walk on, typically 24 hours for water-based and 72 hours for oil-based, and wait at least 7 days before placing rugs or heavy furniture to avoid imprinting the soft finish. Put felt pads on all furniture legs before placing back to prevent scratches on the new finish. Plan to live without that room for 3 to 7 days.
