You should not clean wood with many common household cleaners because they can strip finish, cause swelling, or leave residue that damages the wood over time. Never use harsh chemicals like bleach, ammonia, or hydrogen peroxide in full strength, as they can discolor, weaken, and strip stain. Avoid all-purpose cleaners containing strong detergents, as they leave a dulling film. Do not use excessive water or steam mops, because wood absorbs water, swells, warps, and can develop mold, especially hardwood floors. Avoid vinegar in large amounts or undiluted, as its acidity can eat away at polyurethane finishes over time despite being a popular natural remedy. Never use abrasive cleaners like scouring powders, steel wool, or Magic Erasers aggressively, as they scratch and dull the finish. Do not use furniture polish with silicone or wax buildup like Pledge excessively, as it creates sticky residue that attracts dust. Avoid using dish soap in large quantities. Instead, clean wood with a slightly damp microfiber cloth, a few drops of mild pH-neutral wood cleaner or a tiny amount of dish soap diluted in water, and dry immediately.
