Cleaning a house after floor refinishing is critical because fine sanding dust gets everywhere even with dustless systems. Start by ventilating the house for 24 hours with windows open and fans blowing out. Wear an N95 mask. First, vacuum everything thoroughly using a HEPA vacuum, not a regular vacuum that blows dust back. Vacuum walls, ceilings, light fixtures, vents, window sills, closets, and inside cabinets. Then wipe all hard surfaces with a slightly damp microfiber cloth, rinsing frequently, including baseboards, door frames, shelves, and countertops. For floors, after they have cured at least 72 hours for oil-based or 24 hours for water-based, vacuum with a soft brush attachment, then damp mop with a manufacturer recommended hardwood floor cleaner, not water. Change HVAC filters immediately after refinishing and again a week later. Wash all curtains, bedding, and fabrics that were exposed, and wipe inside drawers. Clean light bulbs and ceiling fans, as dust clings to them. Use a tack cloth for fine dust on trim. Finally, do a second pass a few days later as settled dust will resettle. Avoid using harsh chemicals or steam on new floors.
