The worst month for wasps is typically late summer, particularly August and September, when wasp colonies reach peak size and wasps become more aggressive and noticeable as they search for sugary foods, though activity starts in spring and builds through summer. In spring, queens emerge from overwintering and start new nests, colonies are small and wasps are less noticeable. By midsummer, colonies grow larger with hundreds to thousands of workers foraging for protein to feed larvae. By late summer, colonies reach maximum size, larvae that produce sugary secretion for workers mature and leave, so workers lose sugar source and start seeking sugars from human foods, fruits, and drinks at picnics and outdoor gatherings, making them more nuisance and more likely to sting when competing for food. In August and September, wasps are also more defensive of nests and more active in warm weather, and they are attracted to overripe fruits and fermented substances, sometimes becoming intoxicated and more irritable. So worst months for wasp encounters are August and September, with July also bad. In warmer climates, wasp season can extend from April to October, while in colder climates it ends with first frost in October or November when colonies die and only fertilized queens overwinter. To reduce worst month problems, keep food and sweet drinks covered outdoors, seal trash cans, and remove nests professionally in early summer before they become large.
