What happens if wasp bites you is actually wasp sting, not bite, as wasps sting using stinger at rear, not bite with mouth, though they can bite to grip, but main injury is sting injecting venom that causes pain, redness, swelling, and itching. When wasp stings, it injects venom containing proteins that cause immediate sharp pain, burning sensation, and local reaction with redness and swelling around sting site that can last hours to days, with itching as it heals. For most people, wasp sting causes only local reaction, with pain subsiding within few hours and swelling within few days, and can be treated with cleaning area with soap and water, applying ice to reduce swelling, taking antihistamine or pain reliever, and avoiding scratching. However, for people allergic to wasp venom, sting can cause severe allergic reaction called anaphylaxis with symptoms like difficulty breathing, swelling of face and throat, hives, dizziness, and drop in blood pressure, which requires emergency medical attention and epinephrine injection. Wasps can sting multiple times, unlike bees that lose stinger, so multiple stings increase venom load and risk of severe reaction. If you are stung, remove from area to avoid more stings, clean sting site, apply ice, monitor for allergic reaction for few hours, and seek medical help if symptoms like widespread swelling, breathing difficulty, or history of allergy occur. Most wasp stings are not dangerous but painful.
