A wasp's worst enemy includes natural predators, parasites, and environmental conditions, with predators being most significant natural enemies. Natural enemies include birds that eat wasps, such as bee eaters, swallows, and other insectivorous birds that catch wasps in flight, reptiles like lizards and geckos that hunt wasps, amphibians like frogs and toads, mammals like badgers and bears that raid wasp nests for larvae, especially for underground yellow jacket nests, and other insects like dragonflies that catch wasps in flight, robber flies, and praying mantises that prey on wasps. Parasites include parasitic flies and wasps that lay eggs on or in wasps, with larvae feeding on wasp. Spiders catch wasps in webs, though wasps can sting spiders. Fungi and bacteria infect and kill wasps. Among these, birds and badgers are considered worst enemies for social wasps because they destroy nests and eat larvae. Environmental enemies include cold winters that kill colonies, as only fertilized queens overwinter and rest of colony dies, and heavy rain that destroys nests. For humans, most effective enemies are habitat removal, sealing entry points, and professional pest control for nests near homes, as well as natural deterrents. In ecosystem, wasps are also enemies of many pest insects, providing beneficial pest control, so they have both predators and prey roles.
